Glock 19 Vs 19 Mos - GLOCK launched the MOS, or Modular Optical System, rifle line last year. With the ability to mount a variety of reflex-style red dot optics on the slide, the GEN4 MOS offers a range of excellent rifles suitable for hunting and competition: the G40, G41, G34 and G35. Building on that success and surprising, well, no one, GLOCK has given the MOS touch to two of its most popular pistols, the G19 and G17. I promised the Gaston team I'd keep it a secret and get my hands on these guys in early December, quickly making the G19 my EDC. . .
As the G19 and G17 are two of the most popular pistol models in the world and are used as the reference for nearly every polymer and/or bolt gun review, they have been reviewed here and there on TTAG. here, I won't look at them again. These are the GLOCK GEN4's and work the same in every way as the standard GEN4 G19 and G17 except for the MOS parts. It's a GLOCK. You know exactly what you are getting. Each MOS comes with four mounting plates to fit the most popular locations. I have a 4MOA JPoint, which is a very small sight, but obviously not popular enough to warrant the MOS board itself or the scope of any alignment guide. Good news, though, as it fits the #04 plate perfectly, billed as a Leupold DeltaPoint. However, you will need to bring a pair of M4x0.7 or M5x0.7 metric screws.

It fits well and makes the weapons look like their non-MOS counterparts. The first step in mounting the optic is to remove that blank plate.
Once you've selected the correct mounting plate for your optic, use the two screws provided to secure it to the slide. GLOCK already has a thread lock.
The mounting plates are serrated to effectively engage and extend the sliding gears. However, I've never been shy about using an optic to rip the slide. It obviously works very well for that purpose - a lot of shopping - and so far it doesn't seem to mind.
GLOCK's complaint folder is full of suspicions about the MOS gun industry's view. And by industrial, I mean the same polymer materials that come in non-MOS versions. They are too short to witness and any reflections associated with MOS mounting plates. Well, except for my little JPoint…

Full alignment of the factory sights without losing the front sight. In fact, it would be better without the factory rear sight in place, as the JPoint has a rear sight notch molded to work well with the factory GLOCK front sight. And I like to prefer an all black background.
Since the height of the co-witnesses will be different for almost every optic out there, all (as far as I know) longer than JPoint, it makes sense to me that MOS rifles come with cheap, standard stock. I think most MOS owners would replace them no matter what, and the long sight would compromise the ability to lock the dot on other optics. In any case, if Witnesses are on your list, you'll definitely be exploring the GLOCK aftermarket.
As mentioned, the G19 MOS has been my daily carry since early December. I'll probably stay in that role until the summer, when I may or may not go back to smaller single-stack 9mm work. I picked up a kydex holster to try, and now it's great. Cook's Holsters IWB with Adjustable Clip Holster ( reviewed here ) works just as well on the G19 as it does on my other EDCs, and with the large size of the GLOCK I decided to dive into the deep end of accessory carry with the help of the guys at T.REX ARMS. His Raptor is easily camouflaged and the Sidecar adds a storage magazine to the mix. I also picked up a Fenrir OWB that fits the G17 and G19. Check back after breaking them down more.
Although JPoint's auto-brightness adjusts it down to close when in the dark to hide the IWB, to help the 2032's battery last a few months, any electronic sight can die at the wrong time or break for any number of reasons. This is why backup sights are so important to a self-defense weapon and why, in a situation like this, they must be long enough to be visible in the optical lens.

Well, at least if you want to hit long-range goals. Most people are slower with a red dot on a gun than they are on an iron, and Nick reminded me that's because they're waiting to find and set the dot. At standard defensive range, forget the dot and use the reflex sight frame as a phantom ring; if it's visible within the screen, you're aiming and you're one minute away from the bad guy. For this type of use, the ability to adjust metal objects is not important. Battery on or dead, dot or no dot, broken lens, etc., you still have an image to protect.
But to stretch the range again, if that point is low, the irons will be in full play. That would be a shame, though, as the beautiful red dot is terrible for shooting accurately with a rifle. Especially with the sights on most self-defense pistols, designed for quick detection and sharp adjustment rather than high accuracy. At 3, 7 or 15 yards or so it's fine, but back to 50 yards and the confidence level and speed drop. This JPoint's 4 MOA dot is good enough for headshots in torso silhouettes out to 100 yards, although making those shots reliably is a tough task. However, torso hits are available on tap.
The G19 and G17 MOS pistols are the same GLOCK we know and trust. However, they open up a world of possibilities for optics that are not easy with conventional models. The addition of a red dot can be great for competition, hunting, self defense, teaching new shooters and more. Red dots are as easy as getting eye alignment, and an accurate dot can provide the confidence to hit the target at much longer distances than most of us would attempt with a standard pistol sight. These little reflex optics are amazing for CCW use, and I hope we continue to see more optic-ready pistols from GLOCK and other manufacturers coming to market in the future.
Compared to the non-MOS versions, the ability to put a red dot on it increases accuracy. Not for the gun, per se, but definitely for the shooter.
Top 5 Must Have Accessories For Glock 19 Gen5 Mos
Any GLOCK will get five stars here, as aftermarket support is the strongest in the pistol world. Add in the ability to easily mount optics and the MOS versions are truly more than five stars.

Quality. But I'll give them a well-deserved four stars for stellar reliability and durability. Optics or not, MOS guns still have standard GLOCK pistols, GLOCK plastic parts, GLOCK ergos (GEN4 improved that a bit) and BLOCK sights. So four stars for a couple of really good guns, one of which is my new EDC.

I have been using a Glock 19 Gen 5 since the end of August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it since then. I worked to get consistent accuracy with and without variable defense from a concealed position and without a light attached to the rail.
